Xuelei Huang 

Xuelei Huang is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She was educated at Fudan University (BA) and Peking University (MA) in China, and received her PhD from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. She was a research fellow at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, the Nantes Institute for Advanced Studies in France, and the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies in Vienna (IFK). Her PhD thesis was awarded the Ruprecht Karls Prize, and she received an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship in Germany.

 
Her current research focuses on sensory history and she is completing a book manuscript on a cultural history of smell in Modern China and an edited volume on modern Chinese sensorium. Her project at the Center for the History of Global Development is concerned with deodorization and the environmental history of modern Shanghai. Another field of her research is film and media. She is the author of Shanghai Filmmaking: Crossing Borders, Connecting to the Globe, 1922-1938 (Brill, 2014), and a number of essays published in Modern Asian Studies, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, Twentieth-century China, and other academic journals. She has co-curated Chinese film programmes for the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival in Scotland and Edinburgh Filmhouse.
